Award-Winning LEED Platinum Library in U.S. Capital Protected with Sansin

March 2022 —–
LEED Platinum Library

The Southwest Library in Washington, DC, recently won the coveted 2021 Wood Design & Building Sansin Award. The light-filled library was designed by Perkins&Will to emphasize the building’s connection to the community and the natural setting of the park it overlooks. The open, airy design is an invitation for the community to gather and the layout offers many seating configurations. The library achieved LEED Platinum certification for its environmental design, energy and water conservation strategies, and regionally sourced environmentally responsive materials. The structural wood was manufactured by British Columbia-based StructureCraft and protected with Sansin’s enviro-friendly water-borne coatings that allow the beauty of the wood to shine through while offering superior protection. The interior European white spruce glulam was coated with Sansin’s KP-12 formula in clear, which was also applied to the exterior glulam. The exterior wood received an additional layer of protection from two coats of Sansin SDF.
