Sansin Coatings Add Modern Touch to Home in Historic English Village

This striking contemporary country house is set in the garden of a listed 16th century farmhouse in the Rothersthorpe conservation area of Northamptonshire, England. The dwelling replaced a 1950s garage to provide a new home that boasts stunning views across rolling fields. Greenaway Architecture designed the T-shaped structure in homage to the tightly clustered nature of the quaint village surroundings. The design also reflects the heritage of the conservation area with its traditional barnlike features, including vertical timber cladding, which is protected with Sansin SDF (in Driftwood 03). The timber cladding is carried inside the home where it accents the vaulted ceiling of the central dining room. Sansin was selected for its ability to bring out the beauty of the wood while offering superior protection in a range of color options.

Sansin on “Crew” for Award-Winning Rowing Pavilion

The award-winning Neil Campbell Rowing Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario, plays host to major rowing events, including the 2024 World Rowing Championships. It also provides year-round fitness and rowing training for Canadian athletes. Designed by MJMA Architecture & Design & Raimondo Associates Architects Ltd, the building boasts an innovative mass timber composite roof, manufactured by Sansin partner Nordic Structures. Spanning 62 feet – the longest manufactured in Canada – the CLT panels extend in one direction with glulam acting as a “web” to engage them in tension and compression. The roof structure is supported on slender steel columns and CLT shear walls. The design serves to seamlessly connect the athletes to the water and to meet both Net-Zero Energy Design and Zero-Carbon Emissions benchmarks. To protect the wood and showcase its beauty, a comprehensive system of Sansin coatings was applied to the mass timber, including: KP-12UVW, Precision Coat SDF Topcoat in washed white, and Precision Coat SDF Topcoat in clear.

Sansin Finishes Help Award-Winning Aerospace Museum Take Flight

The KF Centre for Excellence – Okanagan Aerospace & Aviation Museum recently won the coveted Wood Design & Building Sansin Award. The iconic mass timber structure – which is shaped like an airplane – is a feat of engineering and design that delivers an immersive aviation experience. The structure features state-of-the-art mass timber construction throughout its various components, including a unique, freestanding doubly-curved CLT spiral staircase that connects the two levels of the museum. Sansin partner StructureCraft provided the structural engineering and mass timber for the building, which was designed by Meiklejohn Architects. To showcase the beauty of the wood and provide superior protection, the mass timber is finished with a comprehensive system of Sansin’s environmentally friendly protective coatings, including SDF clear on the exterior glulam, KP12W clear on the exterior DLT soffit, KP12 clear on the interior glulam, and low-luster Purity Glacier on the interior handrails.

Sansin SDF Creates Warm Atmosphere for Cottage Gatherings

This custom family cottage in Alberta was designed by Sansin partner MiRA Timber Frame for an infill lot near the beach. The exposed heavy timber open-tread stairs, coated in a rich color that contrasts beautifully against the white MDF slat walls, is one of the prominent architectural features of the home. The stairs lead to the heart of the home, where the vaulted great room, kitchen and dining room flow freely to the screened-in covered porch, capturing beautiful views. The timber throughout the home is protected with Sansin SDF, which MiRA purchases from Sansin retailer Days Paint. The timbers are coated with a custom color that MiRA has named “Jacobean”. It has become so popular that MiRA has added it to its stock timber colors. The warmth of the coating is a perfect complement to the lighter tongue and groove ceilings and creates a warm atmosphere for family gatherings.

Luxury Log & Timber Lodge Gets “Peak” Protection from Sansin

Situated at the base of Big Sky Ski Resort in Montana, Montage Big Sky is framed by the Spanish Peaks mountain range. The project is a modern interpretation of a classic North American lodge and is constructed with massive Douglas fir timbers and logs, some of which are as much as three feet in diameter. To protect this substantial investment in wood, ensure it withstands the harsh mountain climate, and enhance the wood’s beauty, Sansin’s protective wood finishes were applied. Sansin customer Dependable Prefinish shop-applied KP-12W and one coat of Precision Coat SDF Topcoat both in a custom color. An additional coat of Precision Coat SDF Topcoat was applied onsite by the contractor.

Striking Sansin Coatings Protect & Showcase Siberian Larch Cladding

This modern, sustainable home was constructed to Passive House Standards using Siberian Larch channel weatherboard cladding from Sansin partner Silva Timber. The tongue and groove style cladding is coated in Sansin SDF Onyx to offer superior protection. The bold black color is a striking contrast to the natural surroundings and the light-toned insulated concrete panels. The owner originally wanted the charred timber look but was thrilled to learn that Silva’s factory coating service and Sansin’s penetrating SDF product in bold colors could offer a similar aesthetic with increased performance.

Sansin SDF Protects Lakefront Estate in British Columbia

This magnificent home sits on the banks of a pristine lake in British Columbia. Featuring Douglas fir logs, spruce glulam timbers and cedar tongue and groove woodworking, this home is a showcase in wood. The wood was supplied by Sansin customer European Timberframe, which has been using Sansin coatings exclusively since 2015. For this project, the company factory applied two coats of Sansin SDF in a custom color to all of the wood that is featured inside and outside the home. The SDF enhances the beauty of the wood while at the same time offering superior protection to ensure this legacy home will stand the test of time.

Halfmoon Bay Cabin Showcases Light & Dark with Sansin

Tucked along British Columbia’s idyllic Sunshine Coast, the angular Halfmoon Bay Cabin is designed and owned by architect Patrick Warren of Frits de Vries Architects + Associates and built by Vernon Construction. The dramatic dark exterior – Western Red Cedar coated in Sansin SDF Onyx – contrasts nicely with the natural wooded setting. Inside, the Western Red Cedar walls and soffits are treated with lye process and then coated with Sansin SDF in a white hue that enhances the natural light in the tranquil space. The design was inspired by a combination of American coastal architecture and Japanese ryokans (inns). The use of natural materials and floor-to-ceiling windows along with Sansin’s low VOC, enviro-friendly wood protection products connect the home to nature and elevate the structure’s low impact footprint in this park-like setting.

Guinness Record-Winning Paddle Protected With Sansin

The world’s largest canoe paddle, which is constructed with 100-feet of Eastern white cedar and nicknamed the Big Dipper, recently won a Guinness World Record for its massive size. The sixton paddle represents the most prevalent means of transportation in the early days of the Georgian Bay village of Killarney, Ontario, and it is now on display at the Killarney Mountain Lodge. The paddle is protected with a comprehensive Sansin coating system, including the installation of Impel Boron Rods and a pre-treatment with Boracol 20-2 to help combat attacks from fungus and wood-boring insects. The Big Dipper was finished with two coats of Sansin’s WoodForce weathering treatment in a translucent tan hue that will allow the wood to weather naturally while offering exceptional water repellency and protection from blackening, discoloration and wood rot. The Big Dipper was designed and constructed by renowned Canadian canoeist Mike Ranta.

Ski Lodge Gets a Lift from Sansin Finishes

Osler Bluff Clubhouse in Collingwood Ontario is a family-oriented ski club where members and guests gather in a spirit of shared enjoyment of winter and the outdoors. The Western Red Cedar cladding and soffits, as well as the real wood timbers, were proudly protected using the Sansin SDF and ENS finishing system. This full luster system is highly durable and should provide years of protection in this tough four-season environment. Sansin Dealer Birch and Benjamin supplied the finish and is nearby to service the customer and help with annual inspections. The wood creates a charming and welcoming atmosphere enhanced by Sansin – a warm place to rest during blustery days on the slopes.
