DPR Construction in Sacramento pushed the envelope on sustainable design with a two-story headquarters building, which restored and expanded an existing 1940s building into a “Living Lab.” The office building features a custom designed biophilic wall centerpiece with low maintenance, low energy, and cost effective wood features that create a sense of serenity in the timberenclosed workspace. The structure incorporates mass timber using glued laminated timber (Glulam) and cross laminated timber (CLT) panels, making it the first CLT structure in Sacramento. It’s also the first shear wall (structural element used to resist lateral forces) application of CLT in California.

Sansin’s water-borne, penetrating Precision Coat Purity Interior Clear was utilized to protect and beautify the engineered wood with an environmental profile that met DPR’s exacting standards. One of the most environmentally sustainable buildings in the City of Trees, DPR’s office is designed to meet LEED® Platinum and WELL™ Certification standards. It is also targeting Net Positive Energy (NPE) from the International Living Future Institute.

High density Ipe wood is found in many parts of North America. Sansin dealers and contractors often ask what we recommend for Ipe beautification and protection. Sansin SDF with SDF Topcoat is well-suited for Ipe, as shown in this photo at a Florida terrace restaurant right by the water. Using one coat of SDF and 2 coats of SDF Topcoat appropriately tinted, the owner was able to protect the deck from wear and tear, UV and moisture, as well as holding up to strong cleaning solutions used to keep the deck clean. After 21 months, the Ipe deck held up well, and with Sansin, all the deck will need is a maintenance coat of SDF Topcoat.

The story of the Petit Moulin du 4 miles began with a love of wood and the forest. The owners are so passionate about wood they have planted some 600,000 trees in northern Quebec and British Columbia over the last 30 years. They have now settled in La Patrie, a forest, agricultural and maple region of Quebec. They utilize Western Thuya that grows in the region – commonly known as the white cedar of Quebec – to manufacture cozy and colorful artisanal cedar saunas to help Canadians weather the long, cold winters. The one-and-a-quarter-inch thick walls are made of planed and molded cedar, and the roofs are constructed of raw cedar clapboard. Highlighting the beautiful color range of the Sansin palette, the saunas are protected for long-term durability and beauty with Sansin SDF on the cylindrical sauna bodies and rooftops.

Research has shown that exposure to natural elements – including wood visible in the built environment – reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and aids in recovery. This is an important aspect at the Heartfelt House, housing families of hospital patients who are undergoing treatment at Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend, Oregon. A collaboration between PeaceHealth and Ronald McDonald House Charities, the 20,200-square foot house – designed by 2fORM Architecture – has two, 10-room wings, one for families of pediatric patients and the other for families of adult patients. The use of wood throughout the project, combined with the blurred lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, works to convey a sense of well-being and connection to nature. Sansin’s Precision Coat SDF in a custom tint provides the rich, but natural look that was desired on the exterior Accoya siding and soffits, along with outstanding UV protection and water repellency that is important in this part of Oregon.

Designed by Lubor Trubka Associates Architects, the Tsleil–Waututh First Nation wanted to build a community campus in North Vancouver, BC, that would serve as the hub of the community and be expressive of the Nation’s philosophy and cultural heritage.

By pairing mass timber elements such as Glulam columns, beams and stairs and Nail Laminated Timber panels with traditional materials like Douglas Fir siding and Red Cedar columns and beams, the building expresses strength and resilience coupled with a sense of well-being, reflecting both local history and the native landscape.

Inside and out, Sansin is featured on this stunning building with products ranging from Sansin SDF and Foundation to ENS Optimum Clear and Purity Floor.

In 2019 a massive new structure at Killarney Mountain Lodge was unveiled – a new convention center called Canada House. This stunning 34,000 square foot facility is currently the largest log conference center in the world. White pine logs were sourced from Quebec and Ontario, and Douglas Fir from British Columbia. During construction, the logs were protected from UV, staining and discoloration with Sansin’s Timber-Tec M-30.

Canada House needed a sustainable finish that could provide the right aesthetics while being easily maintainable for years to come. Sansin Classic 1-2-3 was chosen to protect and beautify the enormous logs inside and out. Sansin’s deep penetrating wood finish provides the durability required, while allowing the natural character and beauty of the wood to shine through.

Commissioned by the Government of Québec and designed by ABCP Architecture, the objective of Place des Canotiers was to transform a vast surface parking lot into a public place by creating a multi-storey parking structure at the foot of Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Part of this transformation includes an Artifact Wall made with nearly 13 kilometers of western red cedar timbers machined with a precision of 1mm, designed to remind one of the industrial past of wooden wharf piers. Sansin SDF in a Cedar Tone was selected to beautify and protect this awe-inspiring structure in Québec City.

Terrapin Neck, in West Virginia overlooking the Potomac, was selected as the Sansin 2019 Wood Design and Building Award Winner. Richard Williams Architects was challenged to integrate the existing structure to the landscape, including a new wood scrim wall that is meant to mimic the rhythm of the trees and stitch together the elements of a new entry porch with a prominent boulder. Sansin’s SDF and ENS Naturals Topcoat were selected to protect and beautify the Douglas Fir exterior delivering a warm, rich hue – and enjoyment for years to come.

The Rocky Pines Community Centre, located in British Columbia and designed by Lubor Trubka Associates Architects, serves as a large, multi-functional community space on Lower Nicola Indian Band land.

The building architecture features a post and beam structure that uses mass timber elements such as glue laminated beams and timber, along with interior wood featuring select tight knot Ponderosa Pine. Sansin’s architectural wood finishes were used for their beauty, protection and low-VOC profile. The posts and beams are coated with KP-12UVW and Sansin SDF in a custom Light Honey. The pine interior boards and trim feature KP-12UVW and ENS Optimum Clear.

Toronto’s Grange Park playground won the 2017 Wood Design & Building Award. The art-themed destination playground, jointly owned by the Art Gallery of Ontario and the City of Toronto, mimics an artist’s bustling studio with climbable, larger-than-life art tools (a paint can, paint tube, charcoal pencils and painter’s palette). Meant to be played on by young children for years to come, Sansin’s Dec in ultra-saturated and solid hide Blue Jay, Fern Green and Primary Yellow colors was selected for its performance, environmentally friendly benefits, and for its ease of use and maintenance.
