Okanagan Aerospace & Aviation Museum one of many award winners coated with Sansin architectural finishes
Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – April 13, 2023 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, today announced the winner of the 2022-23 Wood Design & Building Sansin Award: KF Centre for Excellence – Okanagan Aerospace & Aviation Museum. The Sansin Award is part of the renowned 39th annual Wood Design & Building Awards Program, which recognizes and celebrates the outstanding work of visionaries around the world who achieve excellence in wood architecture.
The KF Centre for Excellence, which is located in Kelowna, British Columbia, was designed by Meiklejohn Architects Inc. to be shaped like an airplane. The building expresses architectural creativity, structural innovation, and the use of local materials. It features mass timber construction throughout its various components, including a unique, free-standing CLT spiral staircase that connects the two levels of the museum. Sansin partner StructureCraft provided the mass timber for the building.
The wood was protected with a comprehensive system of Sansin’s environmentally friendly protective coatings, including:
- SDF (clear) on the exterior glulam
- KP12W (clear) on the exterior DLT soffit
- KP12 (clear) on the interior glulam
- Purity Glacier (low-luster) on the interior handrails
“This remarkable museum showcases the latest in structural innovation and mass timber construction, and we are proud to be a part of bringing it to life,” says Sjoerd Bos, Sansin’s Managing Director. “Sansin has a long history of protecting mass timber on some of the world’s most impressive wooden structures. Architects, builders, and mass timber manufacturers know they can count on Sansin coatings to offer supreme durability and protection while at the same time allowing the beauty of the wood to shine through.”
For more than 35 years, Sansin has been the only wood protection company focused exclusively on researching and developing environmentally-friendly, water-borne interior and exterior wood products and technologies that deliver outstanding color, durability and performance without the toxicity found in conventional stains.
