Mass Timber and Sansin Greet Thousands in Transit

April 2022 —–
Smart VMC Bus Terminal

The Smart VMC Bus Terminal in Vaughan, Ontario, features a sustainable, innovative design that uses wood to offer a warm welcome to passengers. Phase one of the largest redevelopment project in North America, the terminal connects the subway station below with the suburban bus transport, serving thousands of passengers a day. Dubbed a new kind of “urban magnet” by architect firm Diamond Schmitt, the building features a unique horseshoe-shaped roof that floats above two open, wooden platforms wrapped in glass. All of the structure’s exposed glulam beams and CLT are protected with Sansin’s environmentally friendly wood protection – one coat of KP-12W followed by two coats of Sansin ENS – adding to the project’s sustainable profile. Other eco features include a “cool roof” to reduce the urban heat-island effect, drought-tolerant landscaping, and lots of windows for natural ventilation and lighting.

Award-Winning LEED Platinum Library in U.S. Capital Protected with Sansin

March 2022 —–
LEED Platinum Library

The Southwest Library in Washington, DC, recently won the coveted 2021 Wood Design & Building Sansin Award. The light-filled library was designed by Perkins&Will to emphasize the building’s connection to the community and the natural setting of the park it overlooks. The open, airy design is an invitation for the community to gather and the layout offers many seating configurations. The library achieved LEED Platinum certification for its environmental design, energy and water conservation strategies, and regionally sourced environmentally responsive materials. The structural wood was manufactured by British Columbia-based StructureCraft and protected with Sansin’s enviro-friendly water-borne coatings that allow the beauty of the wood to shine through while offering superior protection. The interior European white spruce glulam was coated with Sansin’s KP-12 formula in clear, which was also applied to the exterior glulam. The exterior wood received an additional layer of protection from two coats of Sansin SDF.

Centre to Cultivate Tsawwassen’s Next Generation Protected with Sansin

February 2022 —–
Tsawwassen Youth Center

The 12,000-square foot Tsawwassen Youth Centre was developed by the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) as a place for learning, nurturing and preparing the TFN youth to become the next generation of leadership. To ensure the design reflected their needs, TFN involved young people throughout the development process. The proximity to the Salish Sea, its setting on the Pacific flight path for migratory birds, and the building’s passive environmental strategies are reflective of Indigenous knowledge. Designed by Mackin Tanaka Architecture, the building is partially constructed of hemfir dowel laminated timber (DLT) components – the first in North America to use DLT as a significant structural component. The DLT was supplied by StructureCraft and is coated with Sansin’s KP-12 on the exposed face of the interior and soffits. KP-12 is an outstanding penetrating protective undercoat for engineered wood components like DLT that enhances dimensional stability and protects wood from UV degradation and moisture absorption.

Sansin Enhances Durability of Alaskan Yellow Cedar on Outdoor Pavilion

January 2022 —–
Project of the Month February 2022

A highly anticipated covered outdoor rink at Gore Meadows Community Centre in Brampton, ON, was brought to life with the help of Sansin. The four-season structure is the first of its kind in the city. It hosts community events in the summer and ice skating in the winter. Designed by ZAS Architects + Interiors, the pavilion’s grid-like structure – a modern take on a WWII aircraft hangar – features beautiful panels of curved Alaskan yellow cedar glulam, which were chosen for their strength, durability and natural beauty. The panels were factory coated with Precision Coat SDF in a custom color to bring out the beauty of the wood and provide the durability needed in this harsh climate. The glulam for the 8,600-square foot domed structure was supplied and coated by the Quebec-based lumber processor and distributor, Goodfellow.

Sansin Protects California’s First Multi-Story, CLT Mass Timber Building

December 2021 —–
POTM January 2022

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

A first-of-its kind building in San Francisco is protected with Sansin. Considered a milestone for mass timber in California, the 134,000-square foot triangular 1 De Haro is the first cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure in San Francisco and is also California’s first multi-story mass timber building. The mixed-use commercial project, which targets LEED Gold certification, was developed by SKS Partners and designed by Perkins&Will. A shimmering glass exterior wraps around the structure’s wooden core, creating a connection between the interior and exterior. Supplied by Nordic Structures, the mass timber creates warmth while also offering a dramatically reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional construction. Sansin’s KP-12 UVW was applied to the CLT in Nordic’s factory, with vertical posts receiving two coats of Precision Coat Purity Glacier. The use of Sansin’s low-VOC finishes not only brings out the character of the wood, but also offers dimensional stability and superior protection. Precision Coat Dealer, Gray’s Paint, supported this project with product and on-site support.

Contemporary Lakeside Estate Upgraded with Sansin

November 2021 —–

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

This lakeside retreat in Washington state features a modern main house, guest house and barn with rich Western Red Cedar siding and solid sawn Douglas Fir timbers that were hand-selected from British Columbia. Built in 2017, the owners were struggling with the performance of the original protective finish. They turned to Sansin dealer Professional Finishes who were confident they could meet the expected durability with Sansin formulas. Professional Finishes values proper workmanship and preparation techniques and understands that this really maximizes the potential durability of Sansin products. The timbers, cedar and front doors were refinished using a custom-color formulated SDF and ENS system by Professional Finishes. SDF is the penetrating first coat followed by ENS Optimum Clear for the second and third coat. Professional Finishes exclusively uses Sansin products for their performance, beauty, durability and adhesive properties.

Sansin SDF Protects Four-Season Park Structure

September 2021 —–
Parc des Saphirs

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

Designed to encourage year-round enjoyment, the Parc des Saphirs ice rink is located in an urban park on the edge of the Royal Quebec Golf Club in Boischatel, QC. The rink invites community members for skating and hockey in the winter and ball hockey or basketball in the summer – thanks to the gravity-defying glulam roof by Art Massif that offers four-season protection from the elements. Designed by ABCP Architecture, the structure has an open-air feel with an architectural concept based on a large wood-steel hybrid frame. The glulam structure with its steel tensioning system supports a 28-meter clear span despite being relatively thin. Sansin SDF in a Suede tint was applied to the Spruce Glulam. The coating was selected for its ability to penetrate deep into the wood and provide outstanding UV protection and water repellence while being breathable.

First-of-Its-Kind Veterans Center Features Sansin Fire-Retardant Finishes

June 2021 —–
POTM - NVRC

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

The National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC) at Syracuse University in New York is a one-of-a-kind educational facility that is dedicated to veterans, military families, and the community at large. SHoP Architects created a thoughtful design that artfully accommodates the building’s many uses with meeting areas, classrooms, offices and airy public gathering spaces. A stunning 21,300-square foot thin-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) feature wall comprises 12,274 CLT Douglas fir planks and spruce panels arranged in a segmented 1/3 running bond pattern, all fabricated by Structure Fusion based in Québec, Canada. The wall wraps around the exterior of the central auditorium, forming a canopy over the lobby and exhibition and event spaces. To enhance the warmth of the wood and provide flame spread protection, Precision Coat SDF FR was selected to coat all of the CLT planks exposed to view. Sansin FireStop97 was applied on all of the wood that is concealed within the walls and ceilings.

POTM - Student Centre

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

The New Student Centre Building at Laurentian University in Ontario, Canada, features a sustainable design that helps the building blend with its surroundings. The design team, comprised of Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture and Gow Hastings Architects, incorporated wood, glass and metal to create a comfortable living room-like gathering spot where students connect with one another and nature. Spruce and pine glue-laminated wood are visible throughout, running the length of the atrium ceiling to the underside of the large canopy. To ensure the character of the wood shines through and to achieve a harmonious look among different wood species, Sansin SDF and SDF Topcoat were applied on both interior and exterior surfaces.
