NATURALLY PERFECT^® WOOD PROTECTION

The five-story Catalyst building in Spokane, WA, is the first office building in the state constructed of environmentally friendly cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, which were sourced by Katerra. The 150,000-square foot project was designed by Michael Green Architecture to be one of the largest zero-carbon, zeroenergy buildings in North America. Catalyst anchors the new South Landing eco-district neighborhood in Spokane, which is a model for sustainable development and a place where business and academia intersect. To bring out the character of the wood and add to the sustainability requirements of the project, Sansin products were used throughout. Inside, Sansin’s KP-12 UVW and SDF Topcoat in a custom tint were used on the lighter areas while Purity Stain (Midnight) and Purity Glacier created the bolder accents. The exterior CLT soffits, as well as the Alaskan yellow cedar cladding and columns, were coated with KP-12UVW and SDF Topcoat.

Sited on the edge of a wooded bluff in the hills of northern California, this spectacular home was designed by Oculus Architecture & Design to appear as if it organically grew out of the terrain. The terraced back sprawls over the slope, complementing the natural contours of the hillside and showcasing stunning views. Curving exterior spaces are linked with terraces and stairs that seamlessly transition to the recessed interior spaces. Western red cedar siding creates a striking contrast to the concrete base on the exterior of the dwelling while cedar ceilings add a touch of warmth to the contemporary interiors. Primed with SDF Foundation, the wood is finished in Sansin SDF in an espresso tint, offering UV and weather protection in an easy-to-maintain, enviro-friendly formula. The stunning new Hayward Field – a “theater” for track and field events at the University of Oregon designed by SRG Partnership – showcases 462 Douglas fir glulam pieces manufactured by Western Archrib and protected with Sansin’s low-VOC, high-performing architectural finishes. KP-12UVW and Precision Coat ENS in a custom color were selected as a coating system for maximum beauty and maintainable wood protection. The project was funded by donors including Phil Knight of Nike, who competed in track and field events at the original Hayward Field while attending the university. Capturing the natural elements of wood and the architectural interplay of light and space, architect firm Farrow Partners designed an elegant and welcoming new entrance, atrium lobby and office area at Toronto Montessori School, forming and shaping the wood to offer a fresh face to the facility. The design utilizes glued laminated Douglas Fir timber supplied by Timber Systems Limited located in Markham, Ontario. Sansin’s three-coat system – KP-12 UVW, Precision Coat SDF, and Precision Coat SDF Topcoat – was custom tinted to meet the exacting look desired by the architect, retaining the natural warmth of wood while offering superior protection in a low-VOC formulation. The interesting shadows cast by the triangular framing around the windows combine with the tree-like wooden structural elements to invoke curiosity and creativity.

The design team at Mira Timber Frame used a custom color of Sansin SDF to protect and showcase the Douglas Fir beams for a 1,500-square-foot modern farmhouse in Alberta, Canada. The open-concept timber frame home replaces an old farmhouse on the property, and utilizes natural materials that help it harmonize with the rural setting. The beams were finished with Sansin SDF at the Mira Timber Frame factory. The ease of applying the product in the shop, as well as the dry-time efficiency and low-VOC properties are reasons the company uses SDF. The owner appreciates the superior protection SDF provides, and the way the coating enhances the natural grain of the wood. The result is so stunning that the project recently won “2020 Best Great Room” from Log & Timber Home Living.

The Fenix I is an iconic, historic building in the South Holland city of Rotterdam that recently underwent a major renovation to create 484,375-square feet of mixed-use space. Designed by architect C.N. van Goor to merge old and new, the immense building houses 212 new loft apartments which are clad with warm wooden facades out of Douglas Fir, facing a tranquil inner courtyard. The cladding is protected with Sansin Precision Coat SDF in a range of custom colors to create an ombre effect. To play off the varying levels of sunlight entering the courtyard, several custom formulas were developed from opaque white to transparent, creating a warm, gradient effect along the entire span of the wood façade from the bottom to the top of the inner courtyard. Sansin’s signature Precision Coat SDF wood protection and unique color system delivered the flexibility and performance needed to showcase this unique structure, while at the same time contributing to the sustainable nature of the overall project. Sansin’s European Partner, Leegwater Houtbereiding, worked with the designers to create just the right shading effect on the building.

DPR Construction in Sacramento pushed the envelope on sustainable design with a two-story headquarters building, which restored and expanded an existing 1940s building into a “Living Lab.” The office building features a custom designed biophilic wall centerpiece with low maintenance, low energy, and cost effective wood features that create a sense of serenity in the timberenclosed workspace. The structure incorporates mass timber using glued laminated timber (Glulam) and cross laminated timber (CLT) panels, making it the first CLT structure in Sacramento. It’s also the first shear wall (structural element used to resist lateral forces) application of CLT in California.

Sansin’s water-borne, penetrating Precision Coat Purity Interior Clear was utilized to protect and beautify the engineered wood with an environmental profile that met DPR’s exacting standards. One of the most environmentally sustainable buildings in the City of Trees, DPR’s office is designed to meet LEED® Platinum and WELL™ Certification standards. It is also targeting Net Positive Energy (NPE) from the International Living Future Institute.

High density Ipe wood is found in many parts of North America. Sansin dealers and contractors often ask what we recommend for Ipe beautification and protection. Sansin SDF with SDF Topcoat is well-suited for Ipe, as shown in this photo at a Florida terrace restaurant right by the water. Using one coat of SDF and 2 coats of SDF Topcoat appropriately tinted, the owner was able to protect the deck from wear and tear, UV and moisture, as well as holding up to strong cleaning solutions used to keep the deck clean. After 21 months, the Ipe deck held up well, and with Sansin, all the deck will need is a maintenance coat of SDF Topcoat.

The story of the Petit Moulin du 4 miles began with a love of wood and the forest. The owners are so passionate about wood they have planted some 600,000 trees in northern Quebec and British Columbia over the last 30 years. They have now settled in La Patrie, a forest, agricultural and maple region of Quebec. They utilize Western Thuya that grows in the region – commonly known as the white cedar of Quebec – to manufacture cozy and colorful artisanal cedar saunas to help Canadians weather the long, cold winters. The one-and-a-quarter-inch thick walls are made of planed and molded cedar, and the roofs are constructed of raw cedar clapboard. Highlighting the beautiful color range of the Sansin palette, the saunas are protected for long-term durability and beauty with Sansin SDF on the cylindrical sauna bodies and rooftops.

Research has shown that exposure to natural elements – including wood visible in the built environment – reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and aids in recovery. This is an important aspect at the Heartfelt House, housing families of hospital patients who are undergoing treatment at Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend, Oregon. A collaboration between PeaceHealth and Ronald McDonald House Charities, the 20,200-square foot house – designed by 2fORM Architecture – has two, 10-room wings, one for families of pediatric patients and the other for families of adult patients. The use of wood throughout the project, combined with the blurred lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, works to convey a sense of well-being and connection to nature. Sansin’s Precision Coat SDF in a custom tint provides the rich, but natural look that was desired on the exterior Accoya siding and soffits, along with outstanding UV protection and water repellency that is important in this part of Oregon.
